Lilacs in Bloom

In my burg it is lilac season. They love the heat and the sun and the occasional stormy day.

The scent is old fashioned, but ever pleasing.

I just bought a baby lilac to plant in my yard and I am thoroughly excited at the prospect!

Here's a pretty lilac from El Corazon called Magi Purple Charm, also known as 423/552 on their site:

A sweet little shimmer with a subtle holo that is virtually undetectable, even in the sunshine!

This is a sheer one and needed three solid coats. I think the formula was decent, my nail beds are small so there is always a bit of mess, I opted to not do cleanup.

I've posted El Corazon before and this is under their "Magic Shine" collection.

From Russia, My Love

Hard to wear holos in the PNW with the cloudy autumn. I prefer a bright sunny snow day to a dark grungy day that feels like it's always about 6:30 in the morning.

El Corazon Active Biogel 423/34  Prisma.

Caught a bit of light on this one with the lamp:

Very faint holo, but it was a crapshoot when I sent for it. It was only a few dollars and the formula is gorgeous.  Even under the sunshine that popped out, it was reluctant. Reminds me of OPI Coronation, but a little more holo.

Two coats, no top coat.

They number their collections and occasionally toss on a name. So far, these have put a lot of polishes I own to shame.

Thanks for reading my little nail polish journal!

(Please be safe, wear your mask, think of others, and all that sensible stuff, right?)

Cinnamon Spice, It's Just So Nice

I haven't done a comp for a few weeks and I have some old polishes and a new one that need an outing.

While these colors seem very traditionally autumnal, I wanted to just toss them out, mainly to inspire me to wear them more often through the winter.

Spice colors are some of my favorites. They are neutral and easy to wear in the winter months when my skin is less tanned. I like golds in the summer and yellows, so for my skin tone, that's how I balance it.

I've got four, so the best thing to do is go down the list!

Diamond Cosmetics Hue Are You

Two very simple coats. A now-discontinued foil, the gold and rich russet red, well, let's say they play well together and we have a gorgeous result.

Very hard to fault this polish: coverage, nice wear, and a classic shade that doesn't feel dated.

With the contrasting shimmer, it could be on the pages of an indie seller's catalogue.

You might find it at a blog sale, but the long story short: Diamond Cosmetics is firmly in the private label camp. So be it. Godspeed.

Zoya Anastasia

Zoya does shimmers quite well. I don't know if that is their intention, for in fact I like their cremes quite a bit, too. It does seem to be their wheelhouse, though. They present them each year - some collections are almost all shimmer - and don't bat an eyelash or mitigate it with 3-4 similar reds or pinks to offset. There was a time when I discarded Zoya, but now, I'm looking again at this feisty salon brand that OPI could borrow from (less puns, people, more content - says a punster).

Anastasia is now gone from the Zoya site (so my surprise as I check into this as I write) and that's a bummer large. The burgundy undertone is strong, but it's so warmed up by the gold shimmer - glass fleck - that it takes on a deep spicy shade that feels like a Victorian brocaded room. Feel the hush of a life with no blue glow, no television/radio, and perhaps just a bit of Brahams playing in a room below.

Still available online with a bit of a hunt. I am sure people blog sale this one periodically.

Zoya Ivy

Ivy is a sheer 3-4 coater (nearly a topper, as you will see) that does pay off.

Apologies for this photo, my skin pulled pink and I had to play in photoshop to get the shade and the skin tone reasonable decent.

I unapologetically love this. My photo makes it look slightly too cognac, but it has more sherry color in it, too. In the bottle at some angles it pulls into a dry sherry shade, so much so that the reddish swatches I saw online seemed unimaginable. And yet, it does have this gorgeous color, undaunted by the warm gold glass fleck that is more subtly meted out.

This feels like nail polish grown up, still with that signature Zoya shimmer.

What is sad, though, like Anastasia, it, too, is gone. Too sad. Reminiscent of the bustle of some fin de siecle 19th century gown. Pull out our Maupassant when you are wearing this. Or browse some Sargent. It will feel just right.

El Corazon Magical Evening Fantasy

From the big buy last year. I've worn it but not blogged it. It is also a three coater, but has this lovely mauve "raw meat" kind of base I can't describe, then it's packed with pink glass fleck shimmer.
Wow!

I think the name is hilarious and gives me such a giggle, but hey, it's not a ghastly pun.

Not much more to say, except it could be one of my favorites, so lovely.

Still on El Corazon, this "Magical" line is extensive and quite beautiful. I recommend poking around, if you dare, it's hard not to build a cart on that site!

A quick comparison, though they are hardly dupes, but it's fun to see them in relation to each other:

Left to right:
Diamond Cosmetics Hue Are You
Zoya Anastasia
Zoya Ivy
El Corazone Magical Evening Fantasy (snicker)

Here's a darker shot:

Left to right:
Diamond Cosmetics Hue Are You
Zoya Anastasia
Zoya Ivy
El Corazon Magical Evening Fantasy (hee, hee)

Here is a shot of the first coat, so you can see how sheer are Ivy and MEF.

Same order. You can see Hue Are You really is gorgeous, would be nice over a medium or dark red.
Anastasia is fairly normal.
Ivy and MEF are sheer, but they do build.

I didn't realize when I started that the Zoyas would be gone. I guess they clean out their stable. I am not on a list announcing discontinued polishes, but maybe I should find out more about that. It's a bummer because Ivy is a stunner.

Thanks so much for reading my little nail polish journal!

2017 Favorites

Kind of a mish mash year with a ton of old photos discovered.

There were, however, a few standouts that strum the heart strings.

Milani Showy Sea Green

This baby really just got me, but good. Love it a lot.

Dance Legend Chimera

Shimmery metallic blurple that just stole my heart. And kept it locked up!

Layla Flash Black

This black holo made the venerable OPI MPJ step aside: the complexity and depth of this one. Wow! It's a beauty!

Zoya Serenity

Pantone says purple for 2018, who am I to argue? I've been saying "purple" since 2010!
You go Purple!

Bees Knees House on Haunted Chill

While toppers are always a good thing, this one takes it to the next level for sheer glass fleck multichromicity.

El Corazon Kaleidoscope Leo

This baby is absolutely a stunner and I have a hard crush on it.
Darling!!

A short list, but all are so nice!

Thanks for reading my little nail journal.

Happy New Year!!!

Layering: New and Old

I wanted to throw some stuff together in the layering realm. Here are three that turned my head a bit.
One is totally new, one has old with new, and one has old with old.

Glam Gloriumptious over Color Club Power Play

Inspired by Roald Dahl, this limited edition set is loaded with glass fleck, flakies and some holo. It is hard not to love this baby.

I don't store it with my holos, it just doesn't give up that as much as the sweet glass fleck-edness.

Limited edition, but at this writing, on sale at Glam polish. In my opinion, a great polish o its own or layered. I think the Color Club brings brightness to this, which I enjoy.

Here's a redo of Color Club power play.

I sure love it a lot. It's got zing! Three coats here and a true classic neon.

El Corazon Kaleidoscope Night Dreams: Leo over Misa Love Bite

This is part of that El Corazone order I put in last year. Holy Cow! I need to order again!

May I just say WOW!!!!! This photo does no justice to this darling polish. It's over a vamp, Misa Love Bite and it just says Step Aside, I am HERE!
Great coverage and a blue shimmer that is so perfect: so vibrant!

This whole Night Dreams collection is still available and I need to wear more of these. The payoff is amazing: two coats over a vamp.

Here is Misa Love Bite

I mean, seriously, right? So dark. Ha. Kaleidoscope Leo just laughed in its face.

This is a three coat deep warm wine vamp. From the Misa Poisoned Passion collection, I know that I love how it's very dark, yet not cheating into the black too hard. Nice!

When I wanted to use this as a base for Leo, I thought it would swallow the pink base and leave more blue, but Kaleidoscope just worked it out.

Princessa Violet Dream over Maybelline Ultra Violet

Yes, I know. Old and blogged, but I wanted to share this because I feel like the bright base finally made a fit for this polish.

I blogged it here in September, but I just wanted to toss it out again. I know: ramshackle!

Here's Maybelline Ultra Violet alone (again...hehehe)

Slightly over saturated and less pale than it was in its earlier swatch.

There it is, a mix of old and new. I recommend the Glam (on sale!) and if you missed my big El Corazon post, check it out, it discusses how easy it was to order and I really think the payoff on these polishes is in a class alone.

I have mixed feelings about Glam, they have stunning photos, but seeing what I see in the photos has been a challenge. I have a lot of Glam polishes, but mostly holos, though their take on the ultra mix of finish/color really is quite a unique perspective and I totally respect the bleeding edge. I love Gloriumptious without reserve and it's just as stunning on the nail as in the bottle, a feat that can be hard to beat when it comes to a lot of complex finishes. I guess mixed is more like a big glass ove LOVE and a drop of "darn it!"

Of course Maybelline Ultra Violet and Color Club Power Play are findable online, just hit your search engine of choice.

El Corazon...Wow!

I've seen El Corozon on the Makeupalley message board a few times, but it's not a super popular brand there. I understand why there is a lot of news around OPI, SC, etc: they are easily accessible and easier to post/talk about. But El Corazon is totally underrated.

They are based in Russia and ship globally. Their formula and price point are pretty amazing from what I heard and I wanted to try out some of these.

El Corazon Active Bio-gel Kir Royal

May I just say it? WOW!

Two coats of oomph. This could be a stamping polish!

Formula tight and easy to use. Not a self-leveling polish, but wore well and this deep cherry red just slayed.

The bottles are similar to Ciate's and hold a whopping 16mL. Nice!

Love this so much.

El Corazone Active Bio-gel Japanese Silk 923/941

A metallic shimmer for the ages. Beautiful teal green with an easy two coat application. Another candidate for the stamping polish hall of fame (page to come soon!)

Neither of these was hard to work with at all, in fact, I have to admit that I was pretty surprised by the win I found here.

This one is from a newer collection called Japanese Silk, lovely Asian inspired pearly and metallic shimmers. Again, dense enough to be a stamping polish.

The Bio-gel line names collections, but also has a number for the collection, then a number, again, for each polish. With their Kaleidoscope line, actual polish names are used.
Here the collection is 923 with the each color a three digit number - this one 941. Odd, but somewhat refreshing in a world of puns and spin-offs from every popular media franchise in the last two decades.

So, ordering. Here is my experience:
  • Went online, found the English language version (http://en.elcorazon-shop.com/) (No, I'm not affiliated in any way)
    • Their site is full of makeup and stuff, but the left nav bar at the bottom shows the polishes. Scroll down, then keep scrolling. Not the most intuitive site.
  • Created an account
    • Pretty easy. Emails will be in Cyrillic, but you can hit up Google Translate.
  • Fill up a basket
    • The basket sits there FOREVER. Seriously. Even polishes that are sold out go on a separate tab next to your basket. Kudos on that one.
  • Shipping is $10
    • June and December free shipping! I ordered December 30th or 31st.
  • Takes about 3-4 weeks
  • Everything arrived perfectly packed, zero issue.

Other notes: their prices are a steal at twice the price. With the exception of the stamping multi-chromes, nothing is more than $5 at this writing.

I will be trotting these out over the next few months as each and every one I've worn so far has really just blown me away.

I took a risk and it paid off.

If you are adventurous and want great polish, I really recommend these guys a lot. The quality is far above most salon brands and the prices are at the low bandwidth of drug store brands.
