When Layering Goes Blah

The sum is only as good as its parts. The chain is only as strong as its weakest link. A layering is only as good as its foundations.

Layering: I love it! I am sure in my random museable babblings I've mentioned that I've got two Melmer drawers full of too-sheer, purposefully-sheer, top coats, layer coats, glitters, glitter wannabes, glimmers, shimmers, and glassy faced polishes.

That is a lot, I will crack out the drawers and take a photo, it's funny.

Some of that is stuff like La Boheme and the other Holiday on Broadway Collection. Laudable, if I do say, to have all those beauties in one drawer! On the flip side, I've got some Sally stuff that is so unpigmented that it's only worth using as a base coat until it starts to cause drying trouble or bubbling. Maaaaybe a franken, but not a lot else.
Of course my Albetross (yeah, I know, pretty soon this blog will be about me griping about the SH "money collection, am I bitter? Not much, just trying to rack my brain on how to used these!)

So, diversionary perspectives on my collection aside, here's a layer experiment that fell, to me, flat.

Decent bones, if I do say so myself!
1) Fare Game Frost: irridescence. Nope. Just a wee bit o' glitter. Like a sickly amount, really.
2) Revlon Glimmer Gloss Grape: blue flash. Where'd ya go??
3) Sally Hansen: Pink flash. Well, a little.
4) Princessa No Name, a pink translucent that has a pink/lavender flash. Here? Meh.
5) WnW White: a base that I thought would brighten the Princessa. It seems to be a white hole here.

I took another shot:

I wanted milky with a little flash and pop, it's a bit there, but mostly a soupy looking thing with uneven layers.

I need a better white base, that WnW was a bear to apply.  The No Name Princessa probably needed a bit more coverage. A ridge filler, or lack there of, seems to also be a character in this play.

Last thought,  I could use a ridge filler, the thin coats show up the lumps.

So, as you can see I am still learning. I kind of want to get rid of all of this polish, except the glimmer gloss. Now, you know it's bad when you want to dump nail polish! Get a thermometer!!!

Thanks for reading my little nail polish journal!

  1. I appreciate you showing the results even if you weren't happy with them. It could be that some of these topcoats just need a darker base than the pink Princessa in order to shine. Don't give up on them yet!

  2. I think you nailed it. I sometimes see the top coats and forget the base makes the sheers work.
    Thanks for your comment!
